일본, 베이징올림픽 외교적 보이콧 동참…”정부대표 안 보내”
The U.S., UK, Canada and Australia have already announced a diplomatic boycott of the Winter Games over human rights concerns.
Japan also said it won’t send a government delegation to Beijing.
But at the same time, denied that it’s a political boycott.
For more, we have Kim Mi-kyoung, Professor at Pukyong National University.
Thank you for joining us.
China is Japan’s largest trading partner, so the decision would not have been an easy one to make.
What would have been the tipping point for Tokyo?
China didn’t send a government delegation to the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo.
How is this related to Beijing’s somewhat lukewarm reaction to Tokyo’s boycott.
There are also major powers including France and Russia refusing to join the boycott movement.
What are the key reasons for their decision?
South Korea is also not part of the boycott.
One key factor: China’s help is needed for denuclearizing the Peninsula.
Will it generate expected results, or concerning repercussions?
There’s a lot at stake for the U.S.
Hosting the 2028 summer Games and the 2030 Winter Olympics.
Judging by its relations with China, could there be retaliatory actions by Beijing?
Alright, Professor Kim Mi-kyoung.
Many thanks for your insights. We appreciate it.
