Tokyo and Beijing held talks over territorial disputes in the region amid Chinese threat to Senkaku islands. Japanese Defence Minister Nobuo Kishi and his Chinese counterpart, Wei Fenghe held a virtual meeting on December 27. The two sides discussed the situation in the East China Sea, including waters around the islands. Japan’s Defence Minister opposed Chinese military vessels entering Japanese waters near the disputed islands.
Following the recent talks, the defence ministers of the two countries have agreed to launch a military hotline. The main agenda is to prevent accidental clashes between Japan’s Self-Defence Forces and Chinese military.
