SYDNEY, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) — After a set-one scare, No. 1 seeds Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova beat out unseeded Anna Danilina and Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-4, to clutch the women’s doubles championship in Australian Open 2022 on Sunday.
The Czech duo and Tokyo Olympic champions were able to fulfil a dream that was cut short in last year’s Australian Open, where they lost in the finals to Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka.
Two breaks of service games from each side brought the first set to a deciding tiebreaker, during which a series of slip ups saw the Czech champions lose their first set of the entire tournament.
Fighting back in the second set, Krejcikova and Siniakova secured a break in game one, and levelled the score with the help of their strong defensive play.
In the final set, the duo blazed ahead with a 5-2, double-break, advantage. Despite a brief resistance from the Kazakhstani/Brazilian contenders, the top seeds closed the game out with a back-and-forth rally of lobs.
With their first ever Australian Open title under their belt, the US Open is the only Grand Slam title left on their checklist. The duo won the Roland Garros in 2018 and 2021, as well as Wimbledon in 2018.
Danilina and Haddad Maia made a surprise surge through this year’s tournament, securing their first ever Grand Slam finals after beating out Japanese second seed Shuko Aoyama and Ena Shibahara in the semifinals.
The women’s doubles finals were the second last main draw match before Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medvedev are to fight for the men’s singles Australian Open title on Sunday night.
