Associate Professor Madoka Ono of Research Institute for Electronic Science (RIES), Hokkaido University is to be awarded the Promotion and Nurturing of Female Researchers Contribution Award. Also known as the Kashiko Kodate Award, the award is sponsored by the Japan Society of Applied Physics (JSAP). Under the cross-appointment system, Ono is also a member and senior researcher in AGC Inc.
The Promotion and Nurturing of Female Researchers Contribution Award is given to honor female researchers and engineers who have made outstanding research achievements in the field of applied physics. The award was established with a donation from Dr. Kashiko Kodate (Professor Emeritus, Japan Women’s University and JSAP Fellow). An internationally recognized leader in the field of glass and photonics, Ono is awarded under the Research Achievement category.
The award is given in recognition of her study on the development of high-performance oxide glasses through its structural control. Ono has been researching and developing silica glass, typified by optical fibers. With her collaborators, she recently developed an ultra-transparent silica glass with an optical scattering loss of less than 50% of that of ordinary silica glass fibers by applying high pressure to the glass during its synthesis. Additionally, this discovery elucidated the glass structure that contributes to the low scattering loss and revealed the possibility to further decrease the loss. If applied to optical fibers, this method can significantly reduce the number of signal amplifiers required for long-distance data transmission and can accelerate the practical application of quantum communication.
“I am very happy to receive this prestigious award from JSAP for my work on glass. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the people who supported my research, my nominators, and the professors who selected me for this award. I would like to take this opportunity to continue my fruitful research activities in cooperation with many people,” commented Ono.
The award will be bestowed at the 69th JSAP Spring Meeting on Tuesday, March 22, 2022.
