Russia was switching to more “brutal tactics” like bombarding cities in Ukraine, an analyst from the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) said, after describing its invasion as a “poorly executed operation.”
Ed Arnold pointed out that the Russian troops on the ground did not know the details of the operation until very late, meaning soldiers weren’t able to prepare.
“The Russian war machine has misfired,” he said. “Poor political and military leadership is just filtered down to the operational and tactical level… and they’ve made this very difficult for themselves.”
Arnold also pointed to the key difference now between Russia and Ukraine after nearly a week of fighting, which was morale. He described Ukrainians’ morale as “high,” seeing this war as a “fight for national survival.”
At least 21 people were killed and 112 wounded in shelling in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-biggest city, in the last 24 hours, regional officials said.
