The Russian people are getting a very different view of the war in Ukraine, some even unaware of the destruction and human cost of their country’s invasion of the neighbouring country.
Media outlets are forbidden from calling it a war or an invasion as the Kremlin uses fear and intimidation to control the narrative. Protesting the war is also illegal and police have arrested thousands of demonstrators across the country.
So how did ordinary Russians in Perm and Vladivostok react when Current Time reporters showed them some images from the ground?
“No one is bombing Kyiv. I don’t believe it.” One man said.
“Invade Ukraine? Why, there are our people living there. In Ukraine, in Belarus.” Another said.
Some expressed unwavering support for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade and believed the move was a “preventative” measure, while on the flip side, one woman said the president could go “to hell.”
All interviewees did not provide their names.
