“During a charity live stream, I showed myself playing games enjoyably as a way to unite with my viewers. I streamed it with the intention to tell my position against the war through games, and doing so I was able to collect around 3.6 million yen in three hours. I donated the entire earnings to the Ukrainian Embassy of Japan.”

3. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) Sava Tkachov, Ukrainian YouTuber:
“What was surprising to us is that we have received long messages with some serious content, many of which said that they were willing to go to war with us. One message read: ‘I’m going with you Sawayan. I’m in the last year of junior high school.’ There were many junior high and high school students who took our messages to heart. When I heard that, I developed mixed feelings.”

5. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) Sava Tkachov, Ukrainian YouTuber:
“By sending out messages through videos, I have made kids want to fight war and I cannot really say if this is a bad or good thing. But at least they’ve shown some interest in the ongoing international issue. I find it really meaningful.”

7. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) Sava Tkachov, Ukrainian YouTuber:
“I personally think sending arms (to Ukraine) is not a role Japan should play. Japan should keep calling for peace and raising awareness of the issues by showing leadership among Asian countries. That’s what Japan should do first. Japan has responded (to the war) at quite a fast speed. And of course, some people say Japan could have done better, but to me as a Ukrainian citizen I’m very appreciative and I find it supportive.”

STORYLINE:
Two Ukrainian YouTubers living in Japan held a press conference on Thursday and explained their tactics to raise awareness on the ongoing war using their online channels.
Sava Tkachov and his younger brother Yan run two YouTube channels called ‘Sawayan Games’ and ‘Sawayan Channel’ which in total have over 2 million subscribers. About 80% of their subscribers are male gamers, the majority of whom are 25 or younger.
They recently held a 3-hour game live on YouTube for donations. They collected 3.6 million Japanese yen. Sava said he and his brother donated it all to the Embassy of Ukraine in Japan.
Sava said they were filled with many supportive comments from their subscribers. But he got some mixed feelings after receiving messages from young student gamers expressing their willingness to go to Ukraine with them and fight in the war.
