LONDON, May 27 (Xinhua) — Aston Villa has announced an agreement with La Liga outfit Sevilla to sign Brazilian central defender Diego Carlos.
The price is thought to be in the range of 35-40 million euros for a player who made 34 league appearances in the recently finished season, 33 the previous season and 35 the year before.
Carlos has played a vital role in the Sevilla defense as they finished fourth in La Liga for three consecutive campaigns with one of the meanest defenses in Spain.
As well as his appearances in La Liga, Carlos has also played 14 times for Sevilla in the Champions League, 10 in the Europa League and nine in the Copa del Rey knockout tournament, since moving to Spain from Nantes.
A no-nonsense defender, who is powerful in the air, Carlos also won an Olympic gold medal with Brazil at the 2020 Tokyo Games.
His departure is the first of several expected from the club over the summer as Sevilla president Jose Castro confirmed the club would sell some of its star players. Carlos’ central defensive partner Jules Kounde is expected to be the next to leave, with several clubs including Chelsea thought to be keen on signing the French international.
