Is this really a default though? They have the money, they’re willing to pay, but they’re being prevented from paying by a third party.
Not defending Russia’s actions here, but the real danger of a default is when a country lacks enough liquidity to service its debt, so markets dump their bonds. That’s clearly not the case here, so why wouldn’t anyone still holding Russian debt just hold it?
