Typhoon Aere makes landfall in southwest Japan
TOKYO – A typhoon made landfall near Sasebo in Japan’s southwestern prefecture of Nagasaki on Tuesday morning, with the weather agency warning of landslides, high waves and flooding in low-lying areas around rivers.
Typhoon Aere was moving slowly eastward toward the western and central parts of the Japanese archipelago and is expected to become an extratropical low-pressure system in the early hours of Wednesday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

KDDI network almost recovered from disruptions, compensation in focus
TOKYO – KDDI Corp. said Monday voice calls and data communications have almost been restored nationwide, nearly three days after maintenance work at the Japanese telecom giant led to disruptions on up to 39 million mobile connections and a range of business activities.
The operator of the “au” mobile phone service is facing calls for compensation from customers, while the government is expected to take administrative measures to improve its businesses and prevent a recurrence. Shares of KDDI dropped nearly 4 percent at one point during the day’s trading.

Chinese warship chases Russian frigate near Japan-controlled Senkakus
TOKYO – A Chinese naval ship chased a Russian warship on Monday just outside Japanese territorial waters around the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, the government said, in an apparent attempt to demonstrate to others that Beijing has sovereignty over the Tokyo-controlled islets.
A Chinese frigate sailed in the so-called contiguous zone of the uninhabited islets, which Beijing claims and calls Diaoyu, for about six minutes from 7:44 a.m., chasing a Russian frigate after the Russian ship entered the waters, according to the Defense Ministry.

Figure skating: Asada to stage new ice show from Sept.
TOKYO – Figure skating icon Mao Asada, the women’s silver medalist at the 2010 Vancouver Games, said Monday she is staging a new ice show around Japan from September through next March.
The show named “Beyond” arrives on the back of her “Thanks Tour,” one that she produced for the first time and that was held between May 2018 and April 2021.

S. Korea holds 1st talks of body on wartime labor during Japan’s rule
SEOUL – South Korea said Monday that it held the first meeting of a public-private body it has set up to resolve the wartime labor issues during Japan’s colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula, pledging to work toward a solution to the issue.
“The government will listen to opinions of those who were directly involved in the wartime forced labor issue and of various fields while making continuous efforts in seeking a reasonable solution” through the future meetings of the public-private body, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Zelenskyy calls on Japanese university students to “protect peace”
TOKYO – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on students at a university in Tokyo to “protect peace” as he spoke Monday of his country’s ongoing “fight for the peace of the future.”
Appearing virtually at an event held at Toyo University’s Hakusan campus, Zelenskyy told around 350 students, including Ukrainian exchange students, that “the only time to return peace to the world is now.”

Japan’s ex-PM Aso likens Russian war in Ukraine to bullying of weak
TOKYO – Former Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso on Monday implicitly likened the current Russian invasion of Ukraine to the bullying of weak children, a remark that was quickly criticized by opposition lawmakers as insensitive.
“What kind of child was being bullied during your childhood? The weak were bullied. The strong weren’t bullied. The same goes for countries,” said Aso, currently the vice president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, in a stump speech in Chiba Prefecture near Tokyo, ahead of Sunday’s House of Councillors election.

Softball: Japan icon Ueno awarded by WBSC for long-term contributions
TOKYO – Japan’s softball icon Yukiko Ueno was awarded the Order of the Golden Diamond by the World Baseball Softball Confederation for her years of contributions to the sport during its congress in Taiwan on Monday, the Japan Softball Association said.
The 39-year-old threw six shutout innings to help Japan beat the United States 2-0 in the Tokyo Olympic final last summer as softball returned to the games for the first time since 2008 in Beijing.
