Hyderabad was founded in the year, 1591 by Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah, the fifth sultan of Qutb Shahi Dynasty. It was ruled by successive Nizams of Asaf Jahi Dynasty until the state was merged into Indian Union in 1948.
Though it is one of the fastest growing cities of India, and has emerged as a strong industrial, commercial and technology center, it still preserves the past splendors. Not only pearls and Nizams it has other remarkable credits also.
Hyderabad, which is the capital of the south Indian state of Andhra Pradesh is located in the banks of Musi River in Deccan Plateau. Its 7.75 million residents make it the fourth most populous Indian city the sixth most populous urban agglomeration. Hyderabad is known as “India’s pharmaceutical capital” and “Genome Valley of India”due to the outstanding growth of pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.
It is also known as “Cyber city” as it is one among the global centers of information technology. Though all these credentials add to its enormous pride, the unique name PEARL CITY is the most popular term that comes in the mind of every Indian when he thinks of Hyderabad. It is due to its significant role in the trade of pearls. Pearl trading is happening in the city for over many centuries and hence it has an inevitable role.
During the Qutb Shahi reign, Golconda was one of the leading markets in diamonds and pearls. The Qutb Shahi rulers and the Nizams loved pearls and diamonds and patronized the trade in an elaborate way.
The Azab Jahi Nizams wore robes of pearls studded with diamonds as part of their royal privileges. They also used the paste of crushed pearls to induce beauty.
They led a luxurious life and their affluence brought craftsmen from all over the world especially from the Middle East where rare pearls were abundant.
The queens were covered with pearls and weighed against pearls on their birth days.
Craftsmanship, quality of excellence, variety and inexpensive labor cost are the four vital factors that uplift the popularity of Hyderabad pearls. Apart from splendid pearls, the confidence of originality is the assured gift that we get from the city dealers.
Hence we get original pearls for reasonable price from the pearl bazaars without fear of fake products. The choices of selection are multi fold. It becomes a family tradition for several Indian families to purchase Hyderabad pearls as some pearl stores are even existing for more than a century.
The dealers are said to be the champions of the market and Hyderabad is undoubtedly the largest trading center for pearls in India. Here the jewelers retain their craftsmanship for centuries.
They combine pearls with the glitter of gold, rubies and emeralds. They create enormous styles of ornaments with attractive designs. In the past few decades, there has been a gradual influence of western designs in the market.
There is an entire street which exclusively comprises of pearl shops named ‘Patther Gatti’. The ‘satlada’ and ‘panchlada haar’ are seven and five stringed necklaces.
They are often scattered with emerald or onyx beads set in nine carat gold. Earrings such as karanphool and cholaphool set with uncut diamonds and pearls are famous among Hyderabad women.
The pearl markets in the city also offer unlimited varieties of chokers and lockets.
There is still an attraction for the dazzling Hyderabad bangles among millions of Indian women. There are four hundred and fifty shops flanking either side of the world famous Charminar.
Charminar has an interesting history. Inadequacy of water and frequent epidemics of plague and cholera made Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah to venture outward to establish a new city with the Charminar at its center and with four great roads fanning out four cardinal directions.
Thus Charminar stands as a unique landmark for the city. There are around two thousand and five hundred craftsmen who are capable of molding magic around your hands as bangles. Century old bazaars surrounding this monument are engaged with the hectic trade of pearls and bridal accessories.
Skilled labor is the asset of Hyderabad pearl market. It is guarded as the family secret and the highly skilled job of drilling is still done manually. This sort of perfection is passed over generations this dedicated man power is the foundation for the city to become an ultimate destination for pearls.
Their unmatched craftsmanship is amazing and the cost of labor is also lower comparatively. The artisans here are skilled in piercing and stringing pearls without damaging them.
Dealers import raw pearls from China and Japan and attracts tourists. If you visit a processing center in the city, you can witness a huge number of pearl sorters, drillers and stringers with vast experience as they are doing it as their family profession.
As pearls become an integral part of their life, there is no scarcity for creativity or quality. They still spread the ever lasting glory of their pearl city.
