A system glitch hit eight Japanese regional banks on Saturday, affecting their ATMs and online banking services.
The affected lenders, also including units of Yamaguchi Financial Group Inc. , all use a common system developed and operated by IBM Japan Ltd. and Kyndryl Japan K.K., a system management company split from IBM Japan.
According to IBM Japan and Kyndryl, the glitch resulted from a problem with a power source at a data center that houses servers for the system.
Kyndryl said that its clients’ system has started to be restored.
Among those found to have been affected by the glitch were Hyakujushi Bank of Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture, Gifu-based Juroku Bank and Nara-based Nanto Bank .
The other affected regional lenders were Yamaguchi Bank, Hiroshima-based Momiji Bank and Kitakyushu Bank, all under Yamaguchi Financial Group, as well as Joyo Bank of Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, and Ashikaga Bank of Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, both under Mebuki Financial Group Inc. .
Tokyo-based Lawson Bank, which operates ATMs at convenience stores and elsewhere, said on Twitter that its services have been affected. The bank uses a different system developed by IBM Japan.
The glitch occurred around 11 a.m.
An official of Juroku Bank said its ATM and internet banking services were halted entirely.
The Financial Services Agency is investigating the cause of the problem and its impact on customers after receiving reports of the glitch from regional banks.
